Leon Legge could make a timely return for the Gills at Leyton Orient.
The centre-back has missed the last two matches with a hamstring injury.
Gillingham have been left light in defence following a midweek injury to fellow central defender Ryan Inniss. He has since returned to his parent club Crystal Palace.
Midfielder Charlie Lee insisted he could provide cover at the back but he may not be needed.
Gills boss Peter Taylor said: “Leon still has a chance. He has trained and he is feeling alright.”
The Gills have also recalled Devante McKain from a loan at Bromley and have youngster Josh Hare in the wings. Another option would be to utilise Steven Gregory in defence.
Taylor’s defensive dilemma wouldn’t have been such an issue had he not loaned Callum Davies to Dover a fortnight ago.
“We probably could have done with Callum around,” admitted the Gills boss, to the club website.
“But nobody has a crystal ball and we didn’t realise we would lose two centre backs.
“It is always a risk (to send someone on loan) but I took it and it’s backfired. If someone could tell me exactly what will happen in the future then they can come and be my assistant.”
Departing defender Inniss leaves after just three appearances, two of which he came off injured before a half had been completed.
Taylor said: “He is going back to Palace. He had a bit of a shoulder injury as well and did terrific just to play against Rotherham (last weekend).
“I am sure a lot of supporters will be frustrated that he came here and got injured but I don’t think he is injury-prone. I just think he has been unlucky.”
Taylor has also revealed that Chris Whelpdale will be in the squad that travels. He has missed the last eight games with an ankle injury.
“He is in the 22 and there is a chance he could be in the 18-man squad for the game,” said Taylor.
Striker Danny Kedwell won’t, however, be involved. Taylor wants to give him another week off before bringing back into the action.
