Adebayo Akinfenwa scores a penalty for the Gills Picture: Barry Goodwin

There are very few footballers nowadays who can tell it how it is, but step forward Adebayo Akinfenwa for an excellent insight into a potential loan move to Northampton.

Bayo, a popular player with opposition fans, gets the respect of everyone on the sportsdesk for being so honest and open.

The full interview is in Monday's Medway Messenger but if you can't get a copy of that today then catch a snippet of the big man's word here.

16.35 - KENT CRICKET

Kent continue on their way in the warm-up match with Durham. They are 133-1 in the 27th over, with Fabian Cowdrey reaching his half-century.

16.00 - KENT CRICKET

Score update from the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence. Kent are currently 79-1 in the 18th over needing 277 to beat Durham in their 50-over warm-up game.

Sam Northeast was the man to go, with Daniel Bell-Drummond and Fabian Cowdrey remaining.

Guess what? It's raining. Welcome to the 2014 cricket season.

15.30 - FOOTBALL

I feel like football tonight, like football tonight.

I hear you, why not watch the mighty Chatham in Ryman League Division 1 North?

15.20 - FOOTBALL

Gillingham are to invest in a new Priestfield pitch this summer.

Chairman Paul Scally said: "We are spending a lot of money in the summer and are going to rip it up. We are going to take the whole top layer off and it’s a big job."

14.30 - FOOTBALL

Ramsgate have signed experienced striker Jon Main. The former AFC Wimbledon and Tonbridge Angels front man started the season at Thamesmead Town and was last seen warming the bench at Erith & Belvedere.

The Rams are away to Redhill in Ryman League Division 1 South tomorrow night.

And here's a bit more meat on the bones...

14.00 - CRICKET

We're halfway through at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence...

LUNCHBREAK

Time to catch up on some of the morning's big stories.

Gillingham's Adebayo Akinfenwa reveals how close he came to joining Northampton on loan.

Ryan Inniss tells Luke Cawdell he's itching to get back out there for the Gills.

Dartford boss Tony Burman thanks fans for the noise they made against Macclesfield on Saturday.

13.20 - CRICKET

Our man Barry Goodwin is watching Kent v Durham.

12.50 - CRICKET

An update from the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence...

12.00 - FOOTBALL

Scott Heard in action for Whitstable Picture: Tony Flashman

Gillingham are monitoring highly-rated Whitstable Town midfielder Scott Heard.

Heard was on trial at Chesterfield last week and now the Gills have decided to take a look.

He scored the winner on Saturday as the Oystermen beat Burgess Hill 1-0.

11.40 - RUGBY UNION

Martyn Beaumont is about to score for Canterbury Picture: Chris Davey

What a win for Canterbury RFC on Saturday, 44-29 at home to National 2 South leaders Hartpury College in front of a bumper crowd at Merton Lane.

Read the match report.

11:25 - CRICKET

James Tredwell completes his spell for England in their World t20 game against the Netherlands. The Kent spinner's four overs went for 23 runs.

11:20 - FOOTBALL

Joint-boss Matt Wyatt believes Sittingbourne are virtually safe in Ryman League Division 1 South after their 3-2 win at Walton Casuals on Saturday. Brickies are nine points clear of the relegation zone with nine games left and play Merstham at home tomorrow night.

Victory at Walton was the perfect response after Wyatt and Nick Davis offered their resignation following the 7-1 drubbing at Burgess Hill last Wednesday.

Wyatt said: “We may need another two or three points but we’ve got to 45 and I can’t see us going down from here.

“Walton was our most important result of the season given what happened at Burgess Hill and going six games without a win.

“It takes the pressure off the players and hopefully we can start enjoying our football again.

“Merstham are flying but when you go into games relaxed, that’s when shock results happen.”

Joe Taylor starts a two-match ban while Ashley Ulph and new signing Luke Turner are away on business.

10:55 - CRICKET

I'd wager Bangladesh in mid-afternoon is a touch warmer than Canterbury today and that's where Kent's James Tredwell is in the attack as England take on the Netherlands in their final T20 World Cup group game. His first over went for six runs, leaving the Netherlands on 47-1 after five overs. See you soon Tredders.

10:45 - KENT CRICKET

Mitch Claydon steams in from the Nackington Road end in the first over of a 50-over game against the side from who he joined Kent after last season.

10:35 - GILLINGHAM

Here's a trivia question. How many current Gills players have sat on the subs bench at Anfield?

I don't know the exact answer, but I know it's not none. If you can think of any more then get in touch via twitter or Facebook or leave a comment below.

That's after you click here to read all about Ryan Innis' journey from the away dugout at the home of the Premier League champions towards the starting XI for Gills against Rotherham on Saturday.

10:25 - NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL

I don't personally know how long it would take you to visit every single Ryman League ground in Kent, back-to-back. Sounds like something colleagues of mine like Andrew Gidley or Steve Tervet would know though.

Folkestone to Sittingbourne... ahh, but factor in Margate... onto Cray... carry the seven.... arggghh... it would take FOREVER. Luckily you can take the whistlestop tour of the county right now, in less than 90 seconds, just by clicking here, for Saturday's Ryman League round-up.

10:20 - KENT CRICKET

Ahhh, nothing like a cricket match in March. Outside. In England. I do hope this is an intense warm-up. Don't want any pulled hammies or anything.

10:15 - GILLINGHAM

There was a point last Thursday when twitter was abuzz with talk that Gills striker Adebayo Akinfenwa was set to join Northampton Town's quest to avoid the drop through the Football League trapdoor.

The loan move never materialised on deadline day but the striker tells Luke Cawdell here just how close he came to signing on at Sixfields for a third time.

10:00 - FOOTBALL

Say what you like about Dartford. Seriously, go on.... but one thing you can't say is that they lack character.

They are embroiled in a thrilling battle for survival in Skrill Premier and Saturday's 2-1 win over Macclesfield was their most important of the season thus far.

Click here to see what Darts boss Tony Burman had to say about the Princes Park crowd's part in the victory.

09:50 - KENT CRICKET

First action of the 2014 season at The Spitfire Ground. St Lawrence, this morning as Kent host Durham in a 50-over friendly game.

Teams news from Canterbury is that Kent start with a predominantly youthful team with Sam Northeast as captain, with Rob Key sitting the game out, and opening the batting with Daniel Bell-Drummond.

No Darren Stevens, Geraint Jones or Brendan Nash either, but former Kent paceman Robbie Joseph is back in the fold - possibly on trial. I'll try to find out more for you.

The game starts at 10.30am and entrance is free, so get down there if you get the chance.

I'll bring you updates throughout the day here on Sportsday.
