Gills boss Peter Taylor was pleased with the brief impact made by young striker Jack Marriott.

The 19-year-old, on loan from Ipswich, had a good chance saved when through on goal shortly after he was introduced, late on, in the match at Brentford.

It was Marriott’s debut for the Gills, having sat patiently over the last three games, waiting for his chance.

Taylor said: “He didn’t have long but he did well. It would have been nice for him to have scored and, with his first chance, maybe he should have scored but he has hit the target and it was a good save from the goalkeeper. After that, he had another chance that was blocked.

“That’s what he is. That’s how he scores his goals. He is not going to get one from a long way out after beating 300 people, that’s not him.

“He is always in that box, making runs, getting on the shoulders of people and I was expecting a goal to be honest. I am pleased he went on and had a bit of an impact.”

Fellow loanee Connor Smith didn’t see any action, however. Smith, on loan from Watford, has made just one appearance so far from the bench.

Taylor said:“I was close to playing him. Like Jack Marriott, people will see what a good player he is. I am sure Connor is a bit frustrated and I am a bit frustrated that we can’t put him in but we’ll see – it might be the next game.”
