No game but plenty of Gills international interest

THERE was a time when international weekends barely raised an eyebrow around Priestfield. But with the club now able to boast an unprecedented five senior internationals among its ranks, it won’t just be England’s World Cup fortunes that Gills fans will be keeping an eye on.
Defenders Ian Cox and Brent Sancho have become first-choice players for Trinidad & Tobago, youngsters Jason Brown and Andrew Crofts await their big chance with the Wales squad and Tom Williams will be familiarising himself with the Cyprus team.
Williams became a surprise call-up to Angelos Anastassiades’ national side and will be looking to be among the starters for their Group 4 qualifiers against Republic of Ireland and France.
Williams has been a regular in Neale Cooper’s side since recovering from a ankle injury and the player will have to adapt quickly to a squad built largely around Greek-based players.
Keeper Brown will be hoping to shake off a foot injury and force his way into Wales’ starting line-up to face Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan. Brown, 23, received his first senior call-up following an injury to John Toshack’s regular keeper Danny Coyne.
Crofts, 21, was also called-up to the senior squad for the first time after injuries left the squad depleted.
Wales are currently at the bottom of the Group 6 standings and both Gillingham players will be hoping that Toshack will try out several new faces for the international double-header.
Sancho and Cox are forced to sit out this weekend's Trinidad and Tobago matches with injuries.
Gills manager Cooper said: "Obviously there’s two that aren’t playing because of injuries, but it was nice for Tom to get called-up and Crofts also moved up to the big squad.
"It’s pleasing to see the lads get selected. Touch wood they don’t get injured."
