Peter Taylor blasted his side’s first half showing against Leyton Orient.

The game was as good as over for the Gills before the break after Taylor’s side conceded four goals.

They were 2-0 down after just eight minutes.

Taylor said: “If you do that against a bad team then you are in trouble. If you do it against a good game you are certainly in trouble.

“It was totally unacceptable and I take full responsibility. I pick the team, I do the tactics but we just gave very bad goals away.

"We gave ourselves a mountain to climb. When you play against a good team those mountains to climb are even harder.”

Taylor was forced into making a change in defence, with Charlie Lee replacing injured Ryan Inniss.

But the Gills boss wasn’t putting the blame on just one individual.

“(The reshuffle) doesn’t help but I am certainly not just blaming one player,” he said.

“Our team has got to do better. The first goal was too easy, we weren’t narrow enough as a group and there were too many holes.

“If you are playing against a team who can pass the ball around like Orient you don’t need too many holes because they take advantage of it.”

Taylor sent the same eleven players out in the second half to try and rectify the situation – admitting he had already written the game off.

He said: “They were the eleven that got us into the situation we were in. I am sure there was three of them that wouldn’t have minded coming off in some ways but I didn’t want to do that.

“I was nervous of Charlie Lee getting another booking and I was thinking about taking him off at half-time but apart from that, no.

“There was a fair chance percentage wise we had lost the game and so I was already thinking of Tranmere at half-time.”
