Charlton manager Alan Pardew admitted that his side were fighting for their lives to stay in play-off contention after another setback with Friday's disappointing home point against rivals West Bromwich Albion at The Valley.

The 1-1 draw left the Addicks with just four wins from their last 19 games.

"We need to win four or five of our last six games to give ourselves a chance," said Pardew.

"We're more than capable of doing that but I'll admit we're fighting for our lives to stay in contention of the play-off places.

"The main thing is that the belief is there in the dressing-room."

Yet again the Addicks were found wanting as they threw away the lead after on-loan Greg Halford scored his first goal for the club in the 30th minute when he headed in Darren Ambrose's free-kick.

Charlton held the lead until the 42nd minute when the prolific Kevin Phillips notched his 21st goal of the season with a shot that went in off the underside of the crossbar following skipper Jonathan Greening's free-kick.

Sam Sodje missed an excellent chance to restore Charlton's lead on the stroke of half-time.

Jerome Thomas, who posed Charlton's best goal threat,curled a shot inches wide in the 52nd minute but Albion were the stronger in the second half and Zolton Gera nearly won the game in the 89th minute with a shot that struck the Charlton crossbar.
