A CONTROVERSIAL second half penalty ended Welling's faint hopes of reaching the play-offs in Nationwide Conference South on Saturday.
John Guest was the unfortunate defender adjudged to have handled Wes Harrison's left-wing cross in the 69th minute despite standing just a yard away from the player.
The outstanding performer, Sutton's Matt Gray, sent Wings keeper Jamie Turner the wrong way from the spot.
Welling had fallen behind on 10 minutes when Luke Cornwall was left unmarked to head in a Gray free-kick.
The first half saw the Wings fail to test Sutton keeper Phil Wilson but it was a difference matter after the break.
Welling were camped inside the Sutton halff with Steve Perkins, Matt Bodkin and Che Stadhart all going close in a three minute period.
But the breakthrough never came and although Martin Carthy pulled one back with 10 minutes left it was clear it was never going to be Welling's day as Stadhart and Bodkin again fluffed their lines from close range in the closing stages.
