Powell, who will be 39 in September, has made 18 league and cup appearances for the club this season while coaching younger players.

Powell, one of the most popular players in Charlton’s history, is in his third spell at the club following his release by Watford last summer.

“Chris played more than I expected him to this season,” said Pardew. “He has done some great stuff in the background, coaching and helping the younger players.

“I would love to keep him at the club. Having said that he is chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association which entails a heavy workload.

“He can carry on playing, but not for me. He’s got an outstanding chance of being successful in management and I hope chairmen will see that.

“He’s is a grey area right now. Does he want to play, coach or manage? I would like him to stay at this club.

“What role that would be and how we would work it, I don’t know.”
