GILLINGHAM’S players have been told to rally round following the departure of caretaker boss John Gorman.

Senior professionals Paul Smith and Iwan Roberts are taking charge of training while chairman Paul Scally has hinted he may be involved in selecting the team for the weekend.

Gorman left the club on Tuesday to take over at League 2 club Wycombe Wanderers.

The former England number two, who was brought in by Andy Hessenthaler in October, did not feel it was morally right to apply for the job.

However, he said he would keep fond memories of his brief return to the Priestfield.

He said: “I’ll keep an eye out for them in the coming weeks because it’s a great club but I just felt it would be wrong for me to take over.

“I think Gillingham have a bright future because of the quality of the younger players at the club. Once the club get players back I’m sure they can drag themselves out of trouble.

“I’ve spoken to senior players and young players and they are saying they are sorry to see me go, which is nice. But I’ve had so much help from people at the club and I hope the new man can get them up the table.”

Meanwhile, sources close to the club claim Dave Bassett is having an interview at the Priestfield today as the Gills accelerate their search for a new boss.
