Promising youngster John Saunders landed youth boxing’s most prestigious title when he became Junior ABA champion in Liverpool.

The 16-year-old Medway fighter, of the St Mary’s Boxing Club, beat Wigan’s John Turner 9-7 in the final bout of under-66kgs category at the Everton Park Sports Centre.

St Mary's head trainer Dave Bowler said: "It’s fantastic for John and for everyone at the club.

"John’s a good kid and he deserves it. He’s worked very hard for this. We fancied him to go all the way but it’s something different going out and doing it."
