Charlton stretched their unbeaten sequence to four games in the Premier League but left Southampton on Sunday knowing they deserved maximum points from a game they dominated.

Charlton were at their best in the first half when they took the game to struggling Saints who should have fallen behind in the 12th minute when Jerome Thomas shot straight at goalkeeper Antti Niemi after Danny Murphy's pass had split the home defence.

Two minutes later Charlton central defender Talal El Karkouri saw a shot deflected wide with Niemi wrong-footed.

Within seconds Shaun Bartlett saw a header cannon off the crossbar from Radostin Kishishev's cross.

As Charlton piled on the pressure, the Southampton goal bore a charmed life and Hermann Hreidarsson headed wide from a cross from Murphy in the 20th minute.

Charlton retained their grip on the game in the second half with Kishishev and Dennis Rommedahl going close as`the home side continued to play second fiddle.

At the end, manager Alan Curbishley declared himself satisfied with a third clean sheet in four games.

"I'm really pleased with the way we played and if we had scored early on then we would have gone on to have won the game," he said
