MANAGER Mark Stimson remains confident that he has what it takes to get Gillingham heading back in the right direction.

A recent run of poor results and a lack of goals have left fans questioning Stimson’s ability to guide the side away from the danger zone and back towards Championship football.

He said: “I understand the fans’ frustration and unfortunately for the last year or two at Gillingham it hasn’t been the best.

“There are some people thinking they’ve heard it all before, people say ‘this team are rubbish and it’s not going to change’. I’ve got total belief in what I can do.

“I’ve been here twice before at Grays and Stevenage, in very similar situations and I’m quietly confident we’ll get it right.

“All I’ll say to the supporters is that we’ll give it everything we’ve got and that’s the only way we know. If the players can do the same it will work and we’ll get there.

“I see a very bright horizon which is why I’m bringing these players to the club.

“We can’t talk about the future, we can only talk about now. We need a win or two to relax a few people. We need some results now to get us away from that danger zone below us.”

Stimson was hoping to spend some time this week getting to know his team more and getting them to know each other better.

He said: “I’m looking ahead to a week where we haven’t got a game. We can work on individual stuff for next Saturday, try and get a bonding session in the week somewhere, go to Oldham and hopefully keep a clean sheet and maybe come back with the three points.”

Gillingham have won just once this year, away at Huddersfield and scored just once in their last five games. They currently sit in 18th place, two points above the bottom four.
