Gillingham manager Mark Stimson has vowed to keep on hunting for fresh talent after drawing a blank with his latest transfer target.

The Gills boss was hoping to bring Brentford’s attacking midfielder Glenn Poole to the club but the League 2 leaders are refusing to do business with their promotion rivals.

Stimson has been keen to add extra attacking options to his front line this season and previous approaches for Charlton’s Chris Dickson, former Gills man Ade Akinbiyi and Cheltenham’s Lloyd Owusu have also failed.

There is unlikely to be any new faces in the squad which travels to struggling Accrington this weekend but it won’t be for a lack of trying.

Stimson said: "If someone comes up then great. We didn’t score the other night (at Luton) but previously we hadn’t done badly and we just need to be positive and confident in that area of the pitch.

"There are a couple of players out there who we’re interested in. Unfortunately, we’ve been making calls to teams where we think the boys are on the fringes but all of a sudden they’re on the bench.

"It’s hard but everyone is experiencing the same and we just need to make sure we bring the right player in, because whoever comes in is going to want to play.

"There are a few young kids who are untried or tested and it’s a gamble when you have the likes of Simeon Jackson, Dennis Oli and Mark McCammon already in your squad."

Poole was top scorer for Brentford last season. He was a key player for Stimson while the pair were at Grays and the Gills boss hasn’t ruled out the move.

Stimson added: "We’ve just said to the lad’s advisors that if anything should change then we would do it straight away. We’ll just wait if we get a call and if not we’ll look elsewhere."
