Gillingham 2 Millwall 1

TWO stunning goals brought huge cheers from the fans at Priestfield as Gillingham beat local rivals Millwall.

A cracking first half effort from Clint Easton, struck from 35 yards, and a Matt Jarvis special after the break, brought the Gills their first home points since the start of the season.

The victory provided Gillingham with revenge for a defeat at the hands of the Londoners earlier in the season.

Millwall, who were fielding former Gills front-man Darren Byfield, were out-played for the majority of the match, only finding form late on.

An 87th minute headed goal from substitute Poul Hubertz handed the visitors a lifeline and they nearly snatched it at the death, when Paul Robinson missed the ball by millimetres, with only the slightest of touches needed for an equaliser.

Robinson was centre of attention a minute later, with the game deep into injury time, when he opted to take an attacking throw-in, after Gills keeper Scott Flinders had thrown the ball out so Byfield could receive treatment.

The referee, unable to intervene as the Millwall player was following the letter of the law, wisely signalled a foul throw and averted any repercussions as both sets of players, supporters and management made their feelings known to each other.

Gillingham deserved of the points and the win makes it two wins on the bounce now for Ronnie Jepson’s side.
