Match-winner Craig Fagan believes Peter Taylor should be handed the Gills job beyond this season.

Fagan led Gillingham to three points at MK Dons on Tuesday to leave the Gills close to League 1 safety with seven matches remaining.

Boss Taylor was given the reins until the end of the season but Fagan has no hesitation in believing that the former England caretaker manager can continue to lead the Gills to bigger and better things.

Fagan, who played under Taylor at Hull in 2005 when they tasted promotion together in the same division, said: “The main aim this season is to stay in this league but there is potential for the future.

“Having worked for the manager before, I know what he is capable of doing in this league.

“He got Hull promoted and if he was here next season, with the squad we have now, and even if there were slight adjustments, I would say we could be one of those teams to be pushing to get into the play-offs next year.

“With extra time and working with the team from the start of the season, I am sure we would have more points than we did this year.

“At Hull, we had a considerable amount of backing and could bring in hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of players.

“We don’t have that here, although the chairman has backed the manager in bringing in loan players and stuff.

“At Hull, we had the opportunity to go out and buy players but with what he has done (at Gills this season), he definitely deserves to have the job next season.”
