Peter Taylor is determined to quickly eradicate Gillingham’s defensive errors that crept into Saturday’s pre-season friendly defeat.

The Gills boss was left disappointed in his side after they conceded early on at Priestfield against Championship outfit Ipswich Town.

It was a goal that had ‘last season’ written all over it and Taylor doesn’t want to see his team struggle at the back again.

He said: “It was a poor goal to concede and I said to the players at half-time that it was the reason we had a poor season last year. We kept giving goals away, especially early on in games.

“It was definitely a preventable goal because we had two players going for one ball.

“One player shouted for it and he shouldn’t have done because he didn’t get it. The cross then comes in and I think we should have dealt with it. It was a poor goal and it set us back.”

The Gills had the second worst defensive record in League 1 last season, conceding 79 goals. In their last 10 games of the campaign they conceded a goal within the first 10 minutes in half of them.

“Just as long as we don’t get into that habit again,” said Taylor.

“There were too many times last year that we let in early goals and late goals. We have to stop that because if you do that, you are not going to have enough good Saturday nights."
