It’s never nice to see anyone lose their job, especially when it’s a friend. But in football, you quickly develop a thick skin and learn to become resilient.
Martin won’t be down for long and he will bounce back soon, I’m sure. He has a great bubbly character, he is focused in what he wants to do and achieve, and he has a good track record.
These things happen in the profession we are in and we just get on with our jobs. I got brought in by the gaffer to work for Gillingham Football Club and to do my best for them, and that doesn’t change.
I want to do the best for the club because that’s the best for John Schofield as well. That may sound selfish as it is a team sport but you get judged on it as an individual as well at times. My job is to do the best for Gillingham and I will do that whoever is the manager.
Peter Taylor has come in as interim manager and my job is to do the best for him now and that’s what I will do. I have been involved in situations like this before and I think I have a personality that I can get on with virtually anyone.
My job is to get my head down, get cracking and help the club get as many points as we can between now and the end of the season, starting ton Saturday against Preston.
We then welcome Notts County – one of my former clubs – to Priestfield on Tuesday. It will be nice to catch up with a few familiar faces that night.
It’s been a busy week again on the training ground and we’ve been preparing hard ever since Monday morning. Following Martin’s departure, I had a chat with the lads on Monday and told them I would be taking training and at that stage nobody knew what was happening.
