Welling got off the mark in The Skrill Premier on Wednesday with a point against much-fancied Cambridge at Park View Road.

The Wings, beaten by a late goal at Wrexham on the opening day, again impressed against a full-time outfit, coming from behind to lead at one stage after goals from Ross Lafayette and Lee Clarke.

Harrison Dunk went close for Cambridge early on before the visitors took the lead just after the half-hour when Ryan Donaldson's shot was deflected off Loui Fazakerley hit the bar.The ball then bounced back to hit grounded keeper Lee Butcher and fall into the net.

Welling, unbeaten in Conference South at home last season, trailed for just four minutes. Jack Obersteller, back in the starting line-up, delivered an excellent corner and Lafayette headed in.

Five minutes later another Obersteller cross was nodded down by Kurtis Guthrie and Alex Dyer's shot went straight at keeper Chris Maxwell.

Welling went ahead on the stroke of half-time, however, as Obersteller's cross-shot fell perfectly for Clarke, whose clever turn and early left-foot shot proved too good for the visitors.

The entertainment continued after the break with both teams showing attacking intent, the quality of Welling's passing at times was particularly easy on the eye.

Cambridge were denied an equaliser when Fazakerley cleared Liam Hughes' header from a right-wing corner off the line on the hour.

The end to end nature of the game saw Obersteller denied moments later, Cambridge skipper Ian Miller head straight at Butcher and Lafayette fire wide in quick succession.

The visitors levelled the scores on 68 minutes when substitute Nathan Arnold showed a good burst of pace to create space and drill home a right-foot shot.

Two minutes later, Guthrie was denied by a close-range block, then Fraser Franks volleyed wide and Maxwell's clearance came back off substitute Loick Pires but, fortunately for the red-faced Cambridge keeper, went out for a throw-in.

Arnold nearly stole a late winner when he curled over from the edge of the box but both sides probably deserved a point for their efforts.
