FORMER Kent cricketer Peter Trego became the fourth goalkeeper used by Margate this season as the club won another high-scoring Nationwide South contest on Saturday.

Trailing 2-1 at half time, Margate produced an impressive comeback with Che Stadhart scoring twice for the second successive game, while Rocky Baptiste got one in each half.

The 23-year-old stopper, signed on a non-contract basis last week, was picking the ball out of the net twice in the first 20 minutes, as the Berkshire side led 2-0.

Baptiste pulled one back before the interval, before Stadhart's brace put Margate ahead. Then Baptiste made it 4-2 before Trego saved a penalty eight minutes from time.

Trego, 23, released by Kent halfway through a two-year contract at the end of last season, replaced Nej Hussein following the 7-3 defeat at Lewes in midweek.

Jamie Cook fired Maidenhead in front after 16 minutes, and Barrie Matthews beat Trego again two minutes later to increase the home side's advantage.

Baptiste scored his first of the afternoon, picking the ball up 35 yards out, beating three defenders, before netting from close range past keeper Nick Hart.

Trego pulled off a fine save from a twice-taken free kick, before a torrential downpour at half time left the York Road surface slippery. Eleven minutes after the break, Hart made a mess of a back-pass, giving Stadhart an easy chance to make it 2-2. Stadhart added Margate's third just past the hour, as Hart blundered again, and Baptiste's near post header after 79 minutes made it 4-2.

There was still time for Trego to cap his debut by keeping out Craig O'Connor's spot-kick 11 minutes from time, and earn Margate their second away league win of the season.

Their first ten games of the season have produced a total of 41 goals, and boss Chris Kinnear said: "It seems if you want to see goals this season then we are the team to watch."

The victory pushes Margate three places up the table to 15th and they are at home to sixth-placed Thurrock at Homelands on Tuesday.
