Armour's re-match with Ampofo put on hold

A THIRD clash between Chatham boxer Johnny Armour and Francis Ampofo has been shelved - for the time being at least.

The WBU bantamweight champion's management team have turned down the opportunity for another re-match with Ampofo as they are looking for a big pay day for their man.

But Armour expects to defend his title again in September against an, as yet, unnamed opponent. However, his team are looking at the holders of the other versions of the bantamweight title or fighters in the current British top five.

That includes current British number one Noel Wilders or the exciting British and commonwealth champion Nicky “1 Smooth” Booth.

But Armour said he would fight anyone. He stressed: "I'm not bothered who I face but I'm hoping for a big show and I've been assured that I’ll fight twice before Christmas which is great news.

“My managers didn't think I needed to fight Ampofo again just yet. I've beaten him twice already and there's no point for me to fight him again at the moment. I'm hoping to find out in the next few days who my opponent will be but I'm training every day and I can't wait to get back into the ring.”
