Battling Gate gain a point

Weymouth 2 Margate 2

MARGATE came from behind twice to earn a deserved away Nationwide South point at the Wessex Stadium on Saturday.

Yet again Chris Kinnear’s selection options were severely limited, through injury and unavailability.

Defender Billy Edwards was the latest player to join the list of absentees, crying off on the morning of the game with flu.

Kinnear, linked last week with the vacant job at next week’s opponents Welling, was left with a squad of just 13 with only Moses Jjunju and substitute goalkeeper Nej Hussein on the bench.

Margate fans left Dorset convinced their team had done enough to claim all three points, and end their six-game run without a win.

Peter Benevides missed a great chance to snatch the winner two minutes from time.

All the goals came in the second half, most of which played in torrential rain.

Angolan Bernardo Cariata celebrated his Weymouth debut, by putting his new side ahead five minutes after the restart.

However, the lead was short-lived as Adrian Clarke pounced five minutes later to put Margate level - his second goal of the season.

Weymouth’s line-up was vastly different to the one they paraded in the 1-0 win at Homelands back in September.

The club have undergone a major transformation since the high profile departure of former chairman Ian Ridley and ex-player-manager Steve Claridge.

One new arrival is Kirk Jackson from cash-strapped Horn-church and he put Weymouth back in front just after the hour.

This time though it took Margate just three minutes to get a second - Canadian Ross Smith getting his first since arriving at the club earlier this season.

Margate looked the side more likely to get the winner, but they had to settle for only their second away draw of the season.
