Gillingham's clash with Bournemouth was a physical one and club captain Mark Bentley admits it’s something they’re getting used to.
“That’s League 2 for you; it’s a fight league,” said Bentley. “You get a lot of teams who don’t want to play football, they just want to smash the ball over your head and win the second balls, and a lot of teams are good at that.
“We’ve dropped down from League 1 where you have a lot of passing sides. I feel we have players here who are good enough to pass the ball, but we don’t have that time in League 2, and it’s back to basics really to get the ball forward.”
Against a Bournemouth side who made it difficult for the Gills to play, Bentley admitted it wasn’t a great spectacle, but the three points were all that mattered.
“It was a win and at this stage of the season, when we’re fighting for promotion, we’ll take anything,” he said.
“It was another scrappy game and the manager was certainly disappointed with our performance in the first half.
“We had to do something and our character improved a hell of a lot in the second half and the win is great as it lifts us up the table.”
