Charlton Athletic 1 - 0 Wigan Athletic

DARREN Bent maintained his dream start to his career with Charlton with the winner as the Addicks made it two wins out of two at the start of the new Premier League campaign.

Bent won the game in the 42nd minute when he rose superbly at the far post to head home Danny Murphy's cross for his third goal in two games.

Newly promoted Wigan were not without their moments, especially in the first half when striker Jason Roberts twice went close.

But Charlton were deserving of a more emphatic win as Murphy and Alexei Smertin controlled the game from midfield.

Charlton: Andersen, Young, Perry, Hreidarsson, Powell, Kishishev, Smertin, Murphy (Hughes 85), Rommedahl (Johansson 77), Thomas (Bartlett 83), Bent. Subs Not Used: Myhre, Fortune.

Attendance: 23,453.
