Boxing boys show ring of confidence

FOUR young Medway boxers stand on the brink of glory as they travel up to Barnsley this weekend to part in the National Schoolboy Finals.

St Mary’s fighters Sam Cairns, Stanley Wortham and Rhys Simmons are joined by Medway Golden Gloves fighter Ricky Rose in their respective finals this Saturday.

The road to south Yorkshire has been a long and gruelling one for the fighters and all eyes will be on them as they look to be crowned national champions.

They boys are:

RICKY ROSE

Age: 13. Club: Medway Golden Gloves. Weight: Under-45kg, Class A

Record: 19 fights, 14 wins, five losses

Opponent: John Roger (Parton’s Cross ABC)

He said: “I’ve been boxing good, especially on the back foot. My dad’s been training me hard and I’m going to just try my best when I get up there.

“I’m happy I’ve got all the way to the final and I just want to get into the ring and devastate whoever I fight. I want to get in there and push him back and get that belt.”

SAM CAIRNS

Age: 13. Club: St Mary’s Weight: Under-39kg, Class A

Record: 13 fights, 10 wins (all 10 by stoppage), 3 defeats

Opponent: Martin Tallon (Salisbury ABC)

He said: “I’ve been boxing quite well and I’m happy with my form. I was confident before we started that I could go all the way and I hope me and the other three boys can do our best.

“Charlie (Rumble) has put is through the basics and now it’s down to me and I’m going to give it 100 per cent.”

RHYS SIMMONS Age: 15. Club: St Mary’s

Weight: Under-51kg, Intermediate

Record: 23 fights, 19 wins, 4 defeats

Opponent: Adam Mytton (Droitwich ABC)

He said: “I’ve done pretty well so far. I’ve beaten Ashley Sexton who’s a double champion so far but I’m just taking one fight at a time.

“My training’s been good and I’m looking forward to getting in the ring in the final. I’ve been in two semi-finals and I’m determined to come back a champion.”

STANLEY WORTHAM Age: 13. Club: St Mary’s

Weight: Under-42kg, Class A.

Record: 14 fights, 11 wins, 3 defeats.

Opponent: Sam Varley (Carmen ABC)

He said: “I want to go all the way in boxing. Some day I want to turn pro and be world champion but first I want to win this.

“I’m on top form and I know I can win this and I’m coming back with the schoolboy title.

“I always feel nervous before a fight but the more nervous I am the better I box. I’m gonna unload on this boy and make sure I win.”
