Folkestone Invicta moved within four points of top-spot in Ryman League Division 1 South after a 1-0 win over neighbours Hythe Town in the Boxing Day derby.

The noon kick-off at the Fullicks Stadium was the first game of the day to kick-off nationwide, and attracted an announced crowd of 852, but although Josh Vincent went close to an early opener for the hosts, and Jordan Wright saw a shot blocked, the first-half ended goalless, though Hythe did strike the home woodwork twice on rare forays forward.

The only goal arrived with a little over 20 minutes remaining as Ian Draycott turned provider for Richard Atkins who turned in his third goal in as many games since rejoining Invicta from close-range.

Invicta stayed fourth but closed within a point of third-placed Burgess Hill Town, and two behind second-placed Merstham, with leaders Faversham another two points clear, though having played a game more than Neil Cugley’s men.

Hythe are 20th, two places and four points outside the drop-zone, though having played several games more than their fellow strugglers.

Whitstable Town came from behind to beat Herne Bay 4-1 in the second Kent derby of the day at 3pm.

Sam Hasler put the visitors from down the A299 ahead after just four minutes infront of a crowd of 458 at the Belmont, however two goals in 60 seconds, 15 minutes in, turned the game on its head.

First Scott Heard levelled and Tom Loynes put the Oystermen infront, with Heard bagging his second six minutes into the second half to give Bay a mountain to climb.

It was Kane Rowland who grabbed the final goal of the game for Town 14 minutes from time as Whitstable climbed to 11, just two points behind Bay, who stay eighth, missing the chance to close the four-point gap to the play-off places.

VCD Athletic snatched a stunning last-gasp win at Leatherhead in the Premier Division on Friday lunchtime.

The strugglers gave their survival chances a boost with a memorable win on the road at Fetcham Grove against the 10-man Tanners.

After a goalless first-half Leatherhead saw Joe Bruce sent-off just before the hour mark after bringing down Orlando Smith in the box, though former Dartford stopper Louis Wells made a fine save to deny Michael Power from the resultant penalty.

However Athletic were not to be denied and in the final minute skipper Lewis Tozer rose to nod a corner past Wells to take Vickers up to 22nd, two places from safety and only below 20th-placed Lewes on goal difference.
