As Lewis Hamilton took another step towards becoming Formula One's youngest ever world champion, another Briton was establishing himself as a possible star of the future at Brands Hatch.

Wayne Boyd won the Formula Ford Festival at the Kent race track on Sunday, joining an illustrious roll of honour that includes Jenson Button, Johnny Herbert and Eddie Irvine.

The 17-year-old from Northern Ireland took a dominant lights-to-flag victory to cap an excellent season, having wrapped up the British Formula Ford title at Donington Park last weekend.

The Jamun Racing driver will now go on to race in Formula Renault Winter Series and is hoping to secure a seat in a higher category in 2009.

Boyd said: "It was a pretty tough race for me. On the race track it's hard to keep your concentration but I kept putting in the quick laps and really went for it.

"Winning the Festival and the Championship in the same year is just mega and I have to say a big thanks to my team, my managers, my sponsors and my dad for making it possible. It's a team effort and they've all done a great job."

Dutchman Chris Maliepaard finished over four seconds behind Boyd, with Australian Tim Blanchard completing the podium in third.

USA Scholarship driver Josef Newgarden took victory in the Kent class final, finishing just ahead of Irishman Patrick McKenna and Scotland's Graham Carroll.
