Skipper Chris Hope capped a magnificent performance at the heart of Gillingham's defence by scoring the goal that earned the club their first league win of the season on Saturday at Bradford.
Hope powered through from the back to meet Nicky Southall's 77th minute corner to soar above the home defence and thump a header wide of goalkeeper Mark Paston.
Gillingham had earlier wasted a couple of good chances early in the second half with Nyron Nosworthy and Tommy Johnson spurning excellent opportunities.
Striker Marlon King made his comeback after a seven month absence through injury as a 65th minute substitute and looked lively up front alongside fellow substitute Mamady Sidibe.
