Bromley manager Mark Goldberg has revealed they were forced to release new signing Liam Harwood back to Carshalton Athletic after the club demanded £10,000 for the defender.

Harwood was set to join the Lillywhites but because he is under 24, not on contract and hence a free agent, Carshalton were seeking compensation and Bromley were refusing to go to a tribunal.

Goldberg said: "Carshalton wanted £10,000 for Liam which we considered unacceptable and it resulted in us parting company with him. It was an unreasonable request which he completely understands."

However, there was some good news from Hayes Lane after Irish defender Donal O'Sullivan - who was part of the 2006-2007 promotion winning team but missed last year through injury - returned to the side.

Goldberg said: "Donal's return is great news and he will fall in as cover at the back which, given the fact we're short at the back and the Liam situation, is perfect timing."

New striker Jay May has been settling in well, but Goldberg has told the former Dartford man he needs to up his work-rate.

He said: "Jay's ability is not in doubt but I have spoken to him about the level of fitness that is required for him to shine this season.

"His work-rate has to be above that he was used to if he is to progress at Bromley but I have no doubt he will become something special."
