GILLINGHAM boss Andy Hessenthaler expects major improvements from his side during tonight’s Carling Cup first round tie against Northampton at Priestfield.
Speaking after their 2-0 defeat at Stoke he said: “We know we need to do better and fortunately we have a game on Tuesday, which is now a tough game because we have been beaten, which we will hope to bounce back in.”
Striker Darren Byfield could be rested, having taken a knock to his knee on Saturday, with Hessenthaler possibly using the match to try out several fresh faces against their League Two opponents.
The last time Gills fans had a chance to see their side in League Cup action on home soil was way back in October 2001 when Southampton won the third round tie 2-1 after extra-time.
The game kicks-off at 7.45pm with the Gills hoping to continue their usual early round success with the possibility of high-class opposition in future stages.
