Former Charlton winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce applauded the debuts of youngsters Jonjo Shelvey, 16, and Scott Wagstaff, 18, in the Addicks side beaten 3-0 at Barnsley on Saturday.
The 25-year-old, who scored Barnsley’s first goal and went on to produce a man-of-the-match performance, is a former graduate of the Addicks Academy who moved on after finding first team opportunites restricted.
In all he made five senior appearances as a substitute before leaving The Valley for Rotherham in November, 2004.
“It’s great that they’ve been given first team debuts so early in their careers,” said Campbell-Ryce.
“I will always be grateful to Charlton for giving me a chance but in the end I had to move on, even though I had over a year remaining on my contract, because I wanted to play regular first team football.
“I’ve heard that they’ve some outstanding youngsters coming through the Academy and it looks as though they are going to get a first team chance, probably earlier than they imagined.”
