Gillingham have been drawn at home to Bristol City in the first round of the Capital One Cup.
The opening round takes place during the week commencing August 5, with round two commencing after the 26th.
Last season the Gills sprang a surprise in round one of the competition, after winning 2-1 at City, in what was Martin Allen’s first competitive game in charge at the club. The Bristol side were then in the Championship.
The Gills faced Middlesbrough in round two, losing 2-0 at home, with goals either side of the break, from Mustapha Carayol and Cameron Park.
In the previous year, with Andy Hessenthaler managing the side, the Gills had lost 1-0 at Brighton and the season before they suffered a 4-1 defeat at Norwich.
In recent campaigns the Gills have met some big teams, including a 3-1 defeat to Blackburn in 2009 and in 2005 they beat a then top-flight Portsmouth side 3-2, thanks to an extra-time winner from Andrew Crofts.
Gillingham have twice been to the fourth round of the competition, in 1964 and 1997. A 3-1 defeat to Leicester ended their run in 1964 and while Ipswich knocked them out Tony Pulis’ side out in the nineties.
The fixtures for Gillingham’s League 1 campaign will be announced on Wednesday morning. The full list will be published here, on kentonline, from 9am.
Gillingham return to pre-season training on Wednesday, June 26 and their first pre-season game is against Faversham Town on Saturday, June 29th (1pm). Later that day the Gills play Ashford United (3pm).
