GILLINGHAM’S bid for a trio of Stevenage players has been ridiculed by the Blue Square Premier club’s chairman.
Phil Wallace was responding to Gillingham’s announcement on Wednesday that an offer for three of their players - Adam Miller, Stuart Lewis and John Nutter - had been turned down.
“You couldn’t buy a decent caravan with the total of their bid for three players,” Wallace told Stevenage’s official website.
“The remarkable thing is that they said they’d need 12 months to pay - how can anyone in football need 12 months to pay £5,000 which is the offer for one of the lads.
“It’s therefore clear that these ‘bids’ weren’t meant to be serious commercial negotiations but instead meant to unsettle the named players and try to create chaos and unrest within our squad.
“I’m disappointed they’ve done that and I feel for Peter Taylor in having to deal with these underhand tactics."
Last week Gillingham announced they had agreed a compensation package with Stevenage in relation to the appointment of Mark Stimson and his assistant Scott Barrett.
Wallace, however, insists the situation has yet to be resolved.
He said: “I’m really surprised they’ve done this, after everything else they’ve done and we are considering our position with The FA.
“Even today (Wednesday), we’re still waiting for this to be resolved.
“Until it does there will be no discussions with them about anyone. They were told this last Friday when they offered us some of their players and they’ve still not finalised the compensation.
“From the evidence so far and the structure of their first bid I don’t believe Gillingham are capable of being able to fund the transfer acquisition of any of our players.”
