Champagne time for ice men

PHIL CHARD: netted three times against his former club

MEDWAY'S ice hockey team, the Invicta Dynamos, won the English National Hockey League (South) title in emphatic style on Sunday evening at a packed Ice Bowl.

They played Peterborough Islanders off the ice, thrashing them 17-0 with the first goal coming after just 43 seconds when Phil Chard’s skilful handling set up Peter Carey.

Player coach Chard paid tribute to the fans after the game telling them: “You were fantastic. All evening it was like having an extra player on the ice.”

Not that the Mos needed extra help. Their incredible performance was summed up late in the third period when they scored a three on five short-handed goal.

Chard and Jamie Smith, who enjoyed a memorable debut, turned on the style for Andy Martin to slam the puck home.

Averaging a goal every three and a half minutes Peterborough looked shell-shocked and netminder Steven Nightingale had had enough midway through the match and was replaced by back-up goalie Dan Jennings.

There were hat-tricks for Chard and captain and man-of-the-match Kevin Lake, with the other goals coming from Adam Smith (8.56), Jon Gray (10.23, 22.01), Jamie Smith (18:15), Gary Dodds (34.28), Dan Fudger (43.26, 50.45), Paul Hume (47:23) and Andy Martin (53.41, 54.26).
