Charlton academy striker Ben Godfrey was on target for Gillingham as they slipped to a 2-1 reserve defeat to QPR.

Godfrey was one of several trialists playing in the match at QPR's Harlington Training Ground on Thursday afternoon.

With the game coming so soon before Saturday’s first team match against Bournemouth, Gills manager Mark Stimson chose to name an inexperienced side.

“What we don’t need is someone getting a knock in the reserves and only having 48 hours to recover,” said Stimson.

Four trialists featured in the match.

Among the starters was Charlton midfielder Harry Arter and the Championship side’s young striker Godfrey.

Playing alongside Arter in midfield was former Cheltenham player Sosthene Yao.

The 21-year-old spent almost three years at Cheltenham but made just two league starts. He joined Fisher Athletic at the start of the season in the Blue Square South.

The fourth trialist was Adam Martin who was named on the bench.

Youth team keeper Connor Quinn was in goal.

Albert Jarrett also played. He is keen to get match practice after missing the two months of the season with an ankle injury.

QPR won the match courtesy of goals from Angelo Balanta and Josh Parker.

Gills: Quinn, Bartrum, Evans, Lewis, Wybraniec, Essam, Arter (Munday 70mins), Yao (Martin 60mins), Cumbers, Godfrey (Day 85mins), Jarrett.
