Coleman strike gives Wings a point

Welling United 1 Dorchester 1

OMARI COLMEMAN'S first-half goal was not enough to hand Welling maximum points against Dorchester at Park View Road on Saturday.

The Wings, as in their opening home game of the season, led at half-time but then conceded straight after the interval.

An entertaining game saw both sides look to get the ball down and play. Welling had the better of the first half and had numerous chances with Coleman, Adam Cottrell and Sam Keevil all going close, while the lively Charlie Henry created Dorchester's best opening.

But it was Welling who took the lead two minutes into first-half stoppage-time when Richard Carpenter's free-kick was headed in by Coleman for his third goal of the campaign.

The lead lasted just four minutes into the second half when a short free-kick saw John Docker's right-foot shot from 20 yards go past Jamie Turner.

Docker nearly repeated the trick five minutes later but his effort came back off the woodwork.

Welling struggled in the second half in searing heat against full-time opposition but still created chances late on.

Coleman was spectacularly denied a second goal by keeper Darren Bechett before Tony Sinclair headed wide from the resulting corner.

Substitute Daniel Maxwell went clean through but chipped the ball straight at the keeper before Coleman was somehow denied on the line from close range seven minutes from time.

Welling are away to Thurrock on Bank Holiday Monday - kick-off 3pm.
