There is plenty of Kent interest at Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games with our women's hockey contingent guaranteeing a medal on Friday though Adam Gemili was rested from the heats of the 4x100m relay this evening.
England's women overcame New Zealand in a dramatic semi-final at Glasgow Green to secure their place in tomorrow's gold medal match against old foes Australia.
On her 50th appearance for her country former Sutton Valence School pupil Susannah Townsend of Canterbury HC and Holcombe contingent Maddie Hinch, Laura Unsworth, Lucy Wood and new signings Nicola White and Sam Quek were in fine form as they took a first-half lead through a close range strike from Lily Owsley.
They defended superbly to keep the Black Sticks at bay, but were eventually pegged back two minutes from time with a superb deflection from Katie Glynn.
New Zealand then struck the post in the dying seconds, but the game finished level and a penalty shootout was needed to decide the outcome.
England converted their first two opportunities but Holcs stopper Hinch confirmed her status as one of the world's best keepers with two interventions, and with England leading 3-1, the final NZ effort went wide to spark wild celebrations.
Hinch said: "I'm renowned for being a bit of a geek when it comes to studying players and I'd done my homework on what to expect from them.
"I knew what they might do under pressure and I felt ready."
She added: "We can't wait for Australia now. They are defiantly favourites but we are going in with the mindset that we can win."
South Africa suffered a 7-1 mauling at the hands of Australia in the other semi-final with new Canterbury signing Dirkie Chamberlain and Shelley Russell of Holcombe unable to prevent the Hockeyroos advancing to Saturday's final.
Australia have scored 32 goals in five games, including three in a win over England on Monday.
In the first game of the day, Scotland's women bossed their 5th/6th playoff against India, only to suffer a 2-1 defeat.
Canterbury duo Nikki Kidd and Nikki Lloyd were in action for the hosts, with Kidd dispatching a trademark penalty corner strike for the only goal.
This evening 100m silver medalist Adam Gemili of Dartford was rested from the England relay team for the heats of the 4x100m, with England expected to challenge for a medal in Saturday night's final.
The team of James Ellington, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Richard Kilty and Andrew Robertson cruised through the third heat, qualifying faster than the Jamaican team which was anchored home in the previous heat by Usain Bolt.
