Transfer-listed Gills midfielder Andy Crofts played the full 90 minutes in the reserves' 4-0 defeat against Reading in the Combination League on Wednesday.

The Gills named a young side which included youth team players Jack Payne, Connor Essam, Rimmel Daniel and Luke Rooney.

Crofts captained the side and was partnered by Stuart Lewis in midfield.

Reading started strongly and opened the scoring within minutes of the kick-off, after Gillingham failed to clear the ball from a corner and James Henry fired home from the edge of the area.

The Royals continued to push forward and doubled their lead on 20 minutes when Shane Long headed home a cross from Henry.

Reading made it 3-0 before the break when Bobby Convey fired home.

In the second half, Reading put the result beyond doubt when David Mooney slotted the ball past Conor Quinn.

Gillingham started to see more of the ball late on when Rooney had a shot pushed round the post before Andy Pugh saw another effort saved by the keeper.

Reading finished the game with 10 men after Mooney picked up an injury with Reading having already used all three substitutes.
