Histon 1 - 1 Welling

WELLING were robbed of three points in stoppage time at newly-promoted Histon on Wednesday night.

The Wings looked to be heading towards all three points until a controversial equaliser in the 92nd minute.

Referee Paul Barnes had already given Histon a debatable free-kick on the edge of the Welling penalty area.

Then, although keeper Jamie Turner parried away Adrian Cambridge’s free-kick, the referee failed to spot a foul when the ball was returned into the area and Wayne Goddard’s low shot found the back of the net.

It was a cruel blow for Adrian Pennock’s Welling side, who had led thanks to a brilliant James Pinnock’s goal six minutes into the second half.

Having collected the ball on the edge of the area, there appeared no danger until Pinnock spun on a sixpence and drilled a stunning low right-foot shot beyond the dive of keeper Lance Key.

It was no more than the Wings deserved for a polished display when they dictated the tempo of the game and created the better chances.

Indeed, had Matt Carruthers not wasted two golden chances in the first 10 minutes they could have had the game sewn up long before the late twist in the tale.

Histon’s best chances in the second half came from miscued clearances by Matt Lee and Chris Moore, which flashed over their own crossbar.

Welling will look to continue their unbeaten start on Saturday when they travel to Weston-super-Mare.
