Crunch time for Gills and Ternent

Nottingham Forest v Gillingham

GILLINGHAM manager Stan Ternent and his assistant Ronnie Jepson want to discuss their future with chairman Paul Scally on Sunday – over a bottle of champagne.

Jepson has confirmed that all contract talks have been put on hold until after the relegation decider at Nottingham Forest.

The pair joined the club on a six-month deal last December and have had great success in turning the club’s fortunes around.

But rumours abound about Ternent wanting to return to the north of England and his future at Priestfield remains undecided.

Jepson said: “We will sort it out after the game on Sunday. The manager will be sitting down with the chairman, hopefully with a glass of champagne each. If not, they will have a cup of tea.”

Champagne corks will only be popping if Gillingham manage to stay out of the bottom three come the final whistle on Sunday.

That will be happen if they win or if Crewe fail to win at home to Coventry.

If Crewe do pick up three points, then a draw would still see Gills avoid the trap door to League 1 if Brighton lost at home to Ipswich.

But Jepson said that Gills would not have anyone monitoring events at the other two games.

But with nearly 4,000 Gills fans already having bought tickets for the City Ground and more expected to travel, Jepson knows they’ll get plenty of feedback anyway.

He said: “I’m sure the fans will let us know what we need to do. It’s going to be great to have so many Gills fans there – it will make it a carnival atmosphere.

“Everyone has worked hard to have our destiny in our own hands. When we took over we’d have taken the chance to stay up by winning our last game.

“It can be quite dangerous playing a team that has already been relegated. They will be more relaxed. But our players have done well to get in this position and hopefully they’ll see the job through to the finish.”
