Gillingham's young striker Luis Cumbers struck twice on Monday night.

Luis Cumbers struck twice for Gillingham reserves as they beat a strong Charlton second string at Stonebridge Road.

The Gills won the Football Combination Central Division match 3-2 against a Charlton side who included Chris Dickson.

Dickson was Gillingham's top scorer last season, as he struck 11 goals in a successful loan spell with the club, and his fourth minute goal on Monday night put Charlton ahead.

The Gills were made up of youth and professionals and included Adam Miller in the side. The midfielder has been recovering from a back injury and he played the full 90 minutes.

Just before the break Gillingham turned the game on its head when Pugh netted from a deflected Miller cross and then Cumbers finished off a ball forward from youth player Jack Payne.

With ten minutes of the second half gone Cumbers made it 3-1 and latching onto Luke Rooney’s pass. The Gills striker chipped keeper Rob Elliot from 25 yards.

Dickson had earlier hit the post with a powerful shot and they did get another back when substitute Izale McLeod shot past Gills keeper Alan Julian.

It was McLeod’s first appearance since March after picking up a knee injury during a loan spell at Colchester.
