Chesterfield 3 Charlton Athletic 3 (Charlton won 4-3 on pens)
GOALKEEPER Scott Carson was the hero as Charlton beat Chesterfield on penalties to secure a place in the Carling Cup quarter-final for the first time in their history.
The League 1 outfit scored a dramatic extra-time equaliser to force spot-kicks but the on loan Liverpool stopper saved from Derek Niven and Mark Allott to send the Addicks through.
The home side had twice led through Colin Larkin and Caleb Folan but were pegged back by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and substitute Darren Bent.
Hasselbaink looked to have won it for Charlton when he put them 3-2 up three minutes into extra-time but a 120th minute Wayne Allison header squared it at 3-3.
Charlton: Carson, Young, Fortune, Diawara, Hreidarsson, Hughes (Ambrose 65), Kishishev (Faye 75), Reid, Thomas, Hasselbaink, M Bent (D Bent 65).
Subs not used: Andersen, Sankofa.
