ALAN CURBISHLEY has confessed for the first time that Charlton’s squad this season is not as strong as the one that finished seventh in the Premiership last season.
His admission is almost certainly the prelude to a summer of wheeler-dealing that will see a significant shake-up of the squad.
"I thought after the West Brom game the side was not as strong as last year’s in the overall make-up," said Curbishley.
"What I want to do is pick up the momentum, which we lost this time last year. I know I’ve got to bolster the squad and am looking at all departments because you must think now about next season.
"I’m not going to say who we’re interested in but I can assure our supporters that we are out looking. The thing is that clubs of our size go for the same players."
Curbishley checked the form of a likely transfer target on Sunday, most certainly on the Continent, after leaving his Essex home at 5am and arriving back at 1am.
Charlton, whose goal difference was an unacceptable minus 10 after the Bolton setback, have recently been linked with quick, young centre-backs Phil Jagielka of Sheffield United and Cardiff’s Danny Gabbidon.
Watford striker Heidar Helguson is believed to be another target.
"We have earmarked players and we’re out looking at them," he added. "The club needs fresh faces.
"I don’t know what the budget is because that will depend on where we finish. Those who believe we’re happy to drop away couldn’t be more wrong because every position is vital."
