Charlie Daniels could be heading back to Tottenham after Gillingham’s 1-0 win over Port Vale but manager Mark Stimson already has a back-up plan.
The Gills boss sees Albert Jarrett as an ideal replacement for the Spurs midfielder.
Stimson admits he is unlikely to keep hold of Daniels after the midfielder’s loan spell from Premiership side Spurs came to an end on Saturday.
“There is a possibility he will go back to Spurs and fight hard to try and get a first team place there,” said Stimson.
“It was important that we got someone in who could fill that slot where we struggled before Charlie came.
"Albert has been in for a few weeks now and done everything we asked of him. If Charlie does depart then it will be up to Albert to take that position and try and retain it.”
Jarrett made a late substitute appearance on Saturday and Stimson expects the Gills fans to see a lot more of him.
“I’m sure we’ll see more of Albert,” he said. “What we’ve seen in training and reserve games has been very encouraging and it’s been nice to get him on the pitch.”
Jarrett’s success has, however, meant the end of Tyrone Berry’s spell at the club. The winger ended his second one-month deal at the weekend and Stimson wished him well for the future.
“It was a big and hard decision for me because he is an honest lad and a great kid,” said Stimson.
“We brought him into the club for peanuts but I’m sure with the little bit of advice I’ve given him hopefully he’ll get back into league football because he deserves to be.
“The club’s got a budget and when you get relegated and are not flying at the top of the league, crowds do drop a little and purse strings have to be cut. Unfortunately Tyrone is one that has had to suffer.”
Daniels made five appearances for the club while Berry made six – four of them coming off the bench.
