Dartford are in talks with Gillingham over a loan move for striker Adam Birchall.

The 28-year-old was transfer listed at the end of May by Gills boss Martin Allen, as he felt the former Dover striker wouldn’t be seeing enough action this season.

Birchall returned from a year out last season but made just seven league starts for the Gills under Allen.

Conference side Dartford, who loaned Birchall for a short period last season, have offered to take the striker until January 2.

Allen is keen on the deal but a financial package has to be right for the Gills, who are looking to off-load some players to free up some space in their transfer budget.

The potential move won’t, however, necessarily end Birchall’s stay at Priestfield for good.

Allen said: “We can review it whether he comes back in to help us, at full match sharpness, or if he gets sold for mega money because he has scored 20 goals by Christmas. It would be good for Adam.”

Birchall joined the Gills in July 2011, having hit 64 goals in 78 appearances for previous club Dover, but broke down in a pre-season match at Welling, rupturing his cruciate ligament. It led to him missing the entire 2011/12 season.
