Young central defender Callum Davies thanked his captain for giving him a helping hand in the Gills team.
Davies has started the last two Gillingham matches but at 20 and with just 25 senior apppearances to his name, he knows he needs the help of the club’s senior members.
Skipper Adam Barrett is the man he is playing alongside at the heart of the Gills defence.
Davies said: “Adam is a top professional and I couldn’t wish to play with anyone better and Leon Legge (the man he replaced in the team) also helps.
“Adam helps when it’s needed. He picks you up when it is needed and tells you when you need to up it. It’s a mutual respect.”
Davies asked for a move last month after struggling to get near a first team start. His only previous appearance came in the Capital One Cup.
Boss Martin Allen was all set to grant him his wish of heading out on loan before an injury to Legge left him doubtful and Davies’ move scrapped.
Legge recovered but a fortnight ago Allen made changes and Davies was one of those to benefit.
He said: “Football changes so quickly. “I didn’t really want to leave. I just want to play football. I am relishing this opportunity now.”
