Basingstoke Town 0 – 2 Welling United
JAMIE DAY made one goal and scored another as Welling comfortably progressed in the FA Trophy third qualifying round at Basingstoke on Saturday.
Their second trip to Basingstoke inside four days, after Tuesday’s 2-2 draw in Nationwide Conference South, failed to get going in the first half as both sides cancelled each other out.
On 28 minutes the home side had their first shot on target but Wings keeper saved comfortably from James Taylor.
Two minutes later Welling’s Che Stadhart blazed over before the best opening of the half fell to Matt Bodkin in stoppage time. A mistake by Jason Bristow let in Bodkin but he shot horribly over with just keeper Stuart Searle to beat.
The tie was decided by two Welling goals in a five minute spell early in the second half.
The first arrived on 56 minutes when Day’s precise corner was somehow turned into his own net by Taylor.
The influential Day wrapped the game up on 61 minutes when he burst into the penalty area and drilled home a right-footed shot.
