Denness to miss county's awards evening

KENT'S chairman of cricket Mike Denness will be unable to present a new club trophy named in his honour at the awards dinner in Canterbury on November 22. The former Kent and England captain is ICC match referee in the current Test series between South Africa and India.

Almost 400 supporters have bought tickets for the event when the county will unveil their three newly-commissioned trophies for best batsman, top bowler and player-of-the-season. The awards are to be named after three Kent legends, with Denness lending his name to batsman of the season.

The new Derek Underwood award will go to the bowler who tops the club's first-class averages, while the Colin Cowdrey award will be presented to the player who, in the opinion of the Cowdrey family, has offered most to the club both on and off the field.

David Fulton will therefore be the first recipient of the Mike Denness award, Martin Saggers the first bowler to lift the Underwood award, but the winner of the Colin Cowdrey award will remain under wraps until the dinner.

Meanwhile, Kent have announced that Morton's Fork will stay on as the club's head caterers after winning a new three-year contract to remain at the St Lawrence Ground.
