ALAN PARDEW used a new motivational tool to fire up his players before Charlton’s 1-0 derby win at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Skipper Andy Reid disclosed that the Addicks manager had urged the players to go out and win for club plc chairman Richard Murray.
Mr Murray and Palace opposite number Simon Jordan have been embroiled in a series of bitter disputes following a boardroom clash immediately after Charlton relegated Palace in May, 2005.
Since then relations between the arch South London rivals rapidly deteriorated and there was strong speculation that Mr Murray and his fellow directors would shun the Palace directors’ box in favour of sitting with supporters.
“The manager reminded us that we have an exceptional chairman,” said Reid. “He’s been brilliant to the players and results like this in derby games should be dedicated to him.
“He’s a big Charlton fan and looks after us. He goes the extra mile for the players.”
Pardew added: “I think it gets bypassed that Richard has to make decisions on the players’ contracts. So I felt they owed him a favour.
“I also owe him a favour, so it was especially good to win for him.”
