KENT'S unlikely bowling hero Neil Dexter spoke of his disappointment after the Surrey Brown Caps landed a dramatic one wicket, last ball NatWest Pro40 League win under lights in Canterbury on Tuesday night.
Only two were runs were needed off Dexter’s final dramatic over of the match in front of a 5,000 crowd.
Chris Schofield played across a yorker to go leg before then, next ball, Neil Saker dragged his back foot allowing Geraint Jones to stump him.
Dernbach flailed at his first ball and set off anticipating a single, only for Dexter to gather overhead, return to Jones for a run out that bought Azhar Mahmood to the middle.
However, Scott Newman (92 not out) then dispatched the final ball through mid-wicket to inflict Kent’s third successive Pro40 defeat.
Dexter said: “Keysie uses me when he can but that wicket was ideal for me, being so slow I just kept the ball back of a length and that made it hard for them to score.
“In the last over I thought if I could get every ball full and straight they might struggle, that’s what I went for but unfortunately it didn’t quite go our way in the end there.
“The colour and softness of the ball made it harder for them, but every time it went off the square it got very wet in the dew which made things trickier for us, but it all made for an exciting finish.
“It’s disappointing to lose this and it was the batting that really let us down tonight. Keysie has just said to us afterwards that every run was crucial tonight and had we got 180 on the board that might have been a winning score.”
Kent return to league action in Cardiff on Friday where they play Glamorgan Dragons, they then complete their Pro40 campaign on Sunday at home to Yorkshire, starting in Canterbury from 12.45pm.
