IT TURNED into a dream weekend for the Gillingham-based ice hockey team Invicta Dynamos as they beat Romford 5-2 on Sunday. The win sees them top of their group in the cup and a semi-final meeting with Haringey.

At a packed and very vocal Ice Bowl, the Raiders took the lead at 3.28 when Andrew Fox set up James Duval. But the Mos dug deep and in a physical game every player played his part, especially young Peter Korff who picked up the man of the match award.

Mos' player coach Andy Hannah was in bullish mood, fighting for everything and he equalised with a fine shot at 7.41. Then came the minute that won the game for the home side with Matthew Beveridge and Mike Kindred scoring within 12 seconds of each other.

In the second period the only goal came from the stick of Hannah, a cheeky goal from nothing unassisted at 22.02. Matt Van Der Velden had another solid night between the pipes and pulled off huge saves from Rushton, Chad Brandimore, Dan Cabby and Anthony Child before Beveridge wrapped things up in the third with a coolly taken goal through a crowd of players.

Romford's expensive import Jason Rushton was the man the crowd loved to hate, winding him up at every given opportunity. Renown for his short fuse, he went into the penalty box for the second time after he and Hannah squared up to each other in centre ice and had a good old-fashioned boxing match.

Both men got 2+2 for their troubles before two dubious penalties were called on Korff and Ward and the Dynamos faced a three on five powerplay. But their determination shone through and the Raiders did not capitalise until both sides were at full strength Danny Marshall with a solo effort at 52.13.

Dynamos team manager Andy Mason said: "This weekend the players have shown a very disciplined and determined attitude. It was hard not to celebrate winning the league on Saturday night but the boys knew how important this cup game was and knuckled down and worked hard.

"They deserved their double success and can now look forward to the knock-out stages of the cup and the play-offs."
